post-production techniques and methods used:

Using the font I chose as a title, I directly downloaded the font from dafont.com and imported it into photoshop. Using 'command t' I was able to determine the the size that would best suit the front cover in proportion 'using the shift tool' to the main image.
I was able to import both the barcode and main image I took into photoshop. I used opacity to make my image more transparent so I could add more effects in a later stage.
I used the rectangular box tool to add the split effect to my main image. I also experimented with the opacity to give my image a soft, transparent aesthetic. Using the colour finder tool, I made sure the colours I used for both rectangles were directly the same as my colour scheme.
Through importing the chosen font I decided as my main body copy, I imported it into photoshop through dafont.com. I experimented with the font size and boldness of the font to meet the standards of my proposal.

I experimented with how I wanted to edit the body copy text, using special effects in photoshop like drop shadow. Again, to match my chosen colour scheme I used the colour finder tool to match the drop shadow effect with the colours I picked for my colour scheme.
For my double page spread, I used the same font as the masthead of my front cover for my main title. I used the magic wand tool to cut out my photo and use it for my double page spread. I also imported a transformation of the social media logos to add to my magazine. I used the rectangle tool as well as the colour finder tool to match my colour scheme and create the aesthetic I wanted to portray for the background.

Through the suitability of my magazine I quickly learnt that I couldn't leave text in the centre of the page as it would be cut off in a magazine format. Therefore, I moved the text using the command tool to both sides of the landscape layout to avoid this problem. I also applied the transformation of a QR code as I said I would in the proposal.

Front cover

One aspect of my front cover I am impressed and satisfied with is my implementation of colours from my colour scheme. The colour scheme I settled with was bright radiant and retro colours that I think perfectly reflect my chosen genre of hip-hop influencing DJs. They provide a modern twist, representing the theme perfectly and also being attractive to my chosen target audience. Young people who are looking to create or are creating will be inspired by the aesthetics of these colours. Also I think this perfectly encapsulates the "vibrant music scene" that I want to represent from the brief. I ensured the colours I picked from my colour scheme are directly the same ones I use in photoshop by using the colour finder tool and matching the RGB sliders with the colours I had already hand picked. However, one way I could improve this colour scheme implementation is through having more digital art that I could present my colour scheme with. This could be through displaying patterns or shapes, but I think this could help with drawing a larger attention to my younger creative audience of 14-17 year olds.

An additional aspect of my front cover that was good was my use of fonts. The choices of my fonts really help to present my style and my genre into the design of the magazine. I liked the fact I matched my artists name with the main masthead as this brings attention to the important details of what I would like the target audience to spot at first glance. "Lemon Milk" was a good font to use for cover lines and body copies underneath as it meant the reader has a clear indication of what the font text, but at the same time presents a modern and creative look to my magazine. The use of "Quantum" as a masthead font is attractive to my young impressionable audience as it captures exactly what I want my magazine to portray as an example for young male/women to get inspired by. In addition to this, I was able to incorporate the colour scheme into my fonts by editing the cover lines to include a 'drop shadow' of purple. This makes the text be bold rather just sitting on the page flat, and reflects well the "vibrant music scene". The only way I could see myself improving the use of fonts in my magazine is by displaying it in an even more creative way by including more graphics and art tools in the production stages as this would be even more inspirational to 14-17 year olds.

Another good point about my front cover is the layout and placements on the page. Through this I was able to incorporate my own unique style in how I wanted to appeal to the consumers of my magazine. An example would be the enlargement of the masthead which draws attention to the title of the magazine instantly, also increasing brand identity. I also liked how I put the artists name in quotation marks in the middle of the page, instantly drawing attention to her identity as a North London DJ. I was able to implement a secondary image that shows the reader what inside of the magazine could entail giving exclusive images away as a teaser. In addition this I was carefully aware of the placement of my cover lines, ensuring they were evenly spread apart and on either side of the front cover. This also allows the reader and my target audience to have a clear sense of knowledge on what my magazine will entail and include inside, and hopefully hooking them into reading it. However, one way I could improve the layout of my front cover is drawing more focus to my secondary image, so it looks like it is meant to be a careful addition of the front cover, and not just stuck there. One way I could do this is by putting more text around the image or using some creative tools on photoshop to bring the image more alive.

Double Page Spread

  • I was able to include the features I said I would into the double page spread, i.e. the interactive QR code and the social media platforms. This allows the young audience to interact with the magazine beyond the print based, hence including an "online and print based" version. This is also ideal for my target audience as they are young and most likely very influenced by the use of technology.
  • I am happy with the implementation of my colour scheme in terms of the design of the background for the double page spread. The colours match the exact original of the colours I hand picked to implement. The use of bold and overlapping colours brings my magazine to life and makes it eye-catching for any reader. Again, this picks up on the fact why I originally choose the colour scheme, which was to attract the exact type of people I want to read this magazine (which is both the creators and enjoyers of this musical genre).
  • To make my magazine even the more creative, I would have liked to implement more of a patterned style as well as the block colours as this would make my magazine even more outstanding. This could be through the use of transformations or overlays. This would just add the extra bit of detail to the double page spread that would entice the readers and target audience even further. It would also be helpful to involve "North London" ideas that present my work, such as local slang or bits of music you can find specifically in North London.
  • Another way to improve would be to establish a connection between the artist and the reader, as this would be through the model engaging eye contact with the camera, as if she was directly looking at the reader. Typically, this would make the reader feel more inclined to pay attention to the article and perhaps even be tempted to buy more issues. This would be a technique of marketing that would be very influential to my target audience in order for them to be enticed to buy multiple issues of my magazine further down the line.
