Generating ideas (P1,M1,U21)

Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1,M1)

"image of brief"

Client requirements:

The client has asked me to create a magazine front cover and double page spread based on the North London music scene focussing on the new and uprising talent.

Explicit:

  • you must create a pitch following your ideas for the magazine.
  • you must create a double page spread as well as a front cover.
  • the magazine must be music based inspired by North London.
  • new online and print based magazine.

Implicit:

  • you should consider copyright and making your own original ideas.
  • you can develop the magazine across all of London (expansion potential).
  • the magazine should be visual and colourful 'vibrant music'.

Open to interpretation:

  • the genre you decide to base the magazine on.
  • you can choose whether you want to cover all of London.
  • you may choose to include audio or audio commentary.

First thoughts:

1. My first thought is that I could create a gender-based magazine to promote different music. With this idea I could create on my double page spread an interview section which bases the target audience on young teenage girls who are looking for inspiration to become a popular artist.

2. My next idea could be creating a venue based magazine on the best places to go to in North London. The double page spread could feature reviews on the venues and what their purpose is and what genre of music they mainly feature.

3. Another idea could be making a magazine primarily on one individual artist. This artist could be up and coming and inspiring to a specific genre in making it more popular again in the modern day. The double page spread could feature a lyric breakdown into one of their new songs and what the meaning is behind it.

Three key ideas:

moodboard featuring artists.

1. One idea I could use is creating a genre based magazine on the genre RnB. I've chosen this specific genre as it has recently had a growth in popularity after being increasingly popular in the 1990's and early 2000's. Nowadays it has a completely different sound but something that is establishing new artists day by day and I would like to include this information in my double page spread by potentially interviewing an artist or collecting multiple opinions on this. This magazine idea would primarily target a young black audience of both men and women at the ages of 17-20. The class this magazine would attract would be between C1,C2 and D. This is due to the fact that this genre is mainly streamed and viewed by this audience and also could be inspiring to them for creating their own music. In addition, this audience is initially the audience that this music originated from. A secondary audience this magazine could target is white female young adults around the ages of 19-23 and the class of A,B,C1. This is because this target audience takes a huge liking and interest into the listening side of this genre. The price of this magazine for both online and print based mediums is £1.99. This is an affordable price for both primary and secondary audiences especially for its value and content. To include a unique selling point (USP) I could feature multiple QR codes. These would scan and display spotify playlists that feature the top songs and artists in the RnB genre at the moment. This is attractive to the modern day reader as it is includes the influence of technology in a world where print based magazine purchases are declining and ultimately keeping this medium of magazines alive and selling.

2. colour scheme for magazine.
Another idea I have is to create an artist based magazine on a new and upcoming talent. The new artist would be a DJ who's specialty is making beats for rappers and singers. The double page spread would entail an interview with the new talent on who inspired him and what it takes to get noticed. It would also include a word on other artists who have worked with him and how it has influenced their discography. The front cover would be vibrant and creative at the influence of a younger audience, inspiring them to also pick up this talent. My target audience would traditionally be teenage boys aged 14-17 of any ethnicity. This is due to the popularity of male DJ's and the success that it has brought to the North London music scene. The social grade would be around B, C1, C2 as it wouldn't normally affect the reader, but someone who wants to take it a step further would have to consider purchasing expensive DJ equipment. A secondary audience would be a slightly older female age group of black ethnicity. This is due to the fact that listeners of music in this DJ category is popular in this target audience, therefore might be interested in taking a further look into the DJ lifestyle. However, they might also consider making their own music too. The price of my magazine would be at an affordable price of £1. This is because it would be a weekly issue and an affordable price for frequent readers. It also wouldn't have too many pages, meaning less of a printing cost. The USP would be due to the niche target audience it attracts as there are not many DJ themed magazines. People who are interested in reading niche market magazines might also be tempted in picking up and purchasing this one. The magazine would be online based only, encouraging the use of technology and making its target audience known in a younger age category.

mind map for magazine.

 3. My final idea is to create a venue based magazine on the best North London music venues to visit. I've chosen this as a potential idea due to the fact that it will give my target audience an insight into London and more of an awareness of  what North London has to offer. On the double page spread I would include multiple pictures of the venues and a review on them by music experts. On the front cover it would be very detailed, including lots of content on artists that perform at these venues and gigs that are coming up soon. My target audience would be primarily for young adults aged 21-24 for both male and female. The NRS social grade would be between A,B and C1.This is because this group of people are the ones most likely to go to music venues as they usually occur at night and create more of a night life for the youth to experience. In addition these venues are costly so a frequent visit to them would be more appealing for an audience in a good financial position. A secondary audience could be a group of a slightly older age and white females. Again, the social grade would be likely to be A,B and C1. This audience might be appealed by this magazine as they are looking for things to do in their free time. The price for this magazine would be at around £2.50. This is because it entails information about private venues that not all of the general public have access to. So more magazine readers would feel included in the secrets of the North London music world. The price would be affordable for both my primary and secondary target audience. The concept of including secret venues gives the magazine a USP as its something that not every person can access therefore, should attract more readers to buy it.

Strengths and weaknesses:

Conclusion:

I have chosen my second idea, which is the artist based magazine on DJing. I have decided to do this idea because out of all my ideas, I believe it is the most original and creative. It's also based on vibrancy and colour as explicitly said on the brief. The magazine should also catch the most interest to a wider target audience despite its niche focus on music. Additionally, its the magazine I have provided with the cheapest sale price. I also think as a magazine idea, it creates a challenge as the existing genre is not that prominent in North London, so to make it more appealing to the target audience is exciting and will also take some work to do. As well as this, my magazine will be influenced by modern day technology as mentioned in the brief it will be both online and print based therefore easily reachable to more people.
